The Lexical Approach explores the idea that native speakers have a cast bank of lexical chunks which are vital for
fluency. Learner fluency, therefore, is not dependent on knowing every minute detail of grammar, but rather on
having rapid access to these banks.
Principles of The Lexical Approach include: the grammar, vocabulary dichotomy is invalid; collocation is used
as an organising principle; successful language is a wider concept than accurate language; the Observe-
Hypothesize-Experiment cycle replaces the Present-Practise-Produce paradigm; and, most importantly,
language consists of grammatacalised lexis, not lexicalised grammar.
